Why do Lauderhill houses fail in the same way as each other?
Because a lot of them are the same house. Lauderhill began as an unusual real estate venture selling off-the-shelf architectural designs by Andrew Geller that had been displayed at Macy’s. About two hundred were built first in Montauk, New York in 1963 and 1964, and the developer Herbert Sadkin then repeated the model here.
The original package houses were small, between 730 and 1,200 square feet, and sold complete with furnishings and appliances. When a street is built from a handful of repeated plans, the pipe runs repeat too: the same fixture positions, the same lengths, the same joints in the same places. What went wrong two doors down is a genuine clue rather than a coincidence.
They were built in the 1960s and 1970s, which puts their drain lines squarely in cast iron. That material is rated forty to fifty years, and in Florida soil and humidity many begin failing at twenty-five to thirty.
