Why is so much of West Palm Beach older than the rest of the county?
Because it was here first. Henry Flagler platted the city in 1893 as a community for the people who worked in Palm Beach, and it incorporated as a town the following year, three decades before most of its neighbors existed. The oldest housing is modest and dense rather than grand, and most of the historic neighborhoods were then developed during the 1920s land boom in Mediterranean Revival and Mission styles.
Thirteen of those neighborhoods are designated historic districts, which is more than any other city we cover. For a homeowner that means two things: the pipe is likely to be a generation older than the cast iron most of the region worries about, and work that changes the outside of the building can need a preservation view alongside the permit.
Post-war suburban expansion after the 1950s and downtown redevelopment from the 2000s sit on top of that, so fifty-three square miles hold three quite different eras of plumbing.
